Two-Spirit
PeopleTwo-Spirit People is a 23-minute video documentary I co-produced, co-directed and edited in 1991 as an undergraduate at the University of California at Berkeley. Screened at film and video festivals across the United States and in Canada and Australia (see screening list below), Two-Spirit People investigates the "berdache tradition" in Native American history and cultures. Within the fairly strict gendered division of labor within most pre-colonial tribal societies, the "berdache" tradition reflects the ways in which some American Indian tribes allowed for, and in many cases honored, gender and sexual differences.
Challenging Western male-female/gay-straight dichotomies, the berdache
tradition provides insight into the ways that different cultures define
and codify gender and sexuality. The video uses interviews with
contemporary gay and lesbian Indian people to
investigate how they incorporate the tradition and its spiritual
significance into their lives.Two-Spirit People is currently available for rental or purchase through Frameline Distribution, San Francisco, CA. You may also contact me directly at lori@mediagogo.com to inquire about the video.
